Altman’s Marlowe is a plausible outcast, a joke and a throwback to the real L.A. (it is a film full of actual locations and natural light), a man who should have a girl instead of a cat, and whose maleness is gently mocked by the naked ladies across the way (the little bitches turned into flower children).
